New to Raw?
Here’s Where to Start
Switching your pet to a raw diet can seem daunting, but it's easier than you think! We get tons of questions about how to get started, so we've put together this guide to make the transition smooth and simple.
Choosing the Right Protein:
Unless your pet has a known protein allergy, starting with a milder protein like chicken, turkey, or duck is a great first step. Stick with one blend for the first two weeks to see how your pet adjusts. Once they're fully transitioned, you can start exploring our other delicious blends!
Transitioning to Raw:
Unlike switching between commercial diets, transitioning to raw can be quick! We recommend a 3-4 day gradual introduction, mixing The Raw Concierge blend with their current food and slowly increasing the ratio. In some cases, a "cold turkey" switch (immediately changing to raw) is also successful, especially when recommended by a vet or necessary due to a pet's condition.
Finding the Right Flavor:
Just like us, pets have individual taste preferences! We recommend trying an 8oz portion of new blends to minimize waste while you discover your pet's favorites. We've seen everything from chihuahuas loving red meat to mastiffs preferring chicken – it's all about finding what your pet enjoys.
Addressing Concerns:
Stomach Upsets: Our Raw Concierge blends are free of preservatives, artificial nutrients, chemical supplements, and other synthetic ingredients that often cause digestive upset. In fact, many pet parents report quick relief from digestive issues after switching to raw.
"Constipation": Raw-fed pets often have smaller, less frequent, and less smelly stools. This isn't constipation! It's a sign that their bodies are efficiently absorbing nutrients and producing less waste. You might also notice a mucousy film in their stool for the first few days – this is normal and indicates their body is detoxifying.
Portion Sizing: Portion sizes depend on your pet's age, breed, weight, and activity level, not their previous food intake. Our feeding guide offers a helpful starting point, but individual needs vary.
Resources for Raw Feeders:
Don't be intimidated by raw feeding groups! While some can be a bit extreme, many are very welcoming to newcomers. You don't have to feed whole prey to be a committed raw feeder.
